STOP LAUGHING… THIS IS SERIOUS!
Falls are now the leading cause of injury hospitalisations and injury‑related deaths among Australians over 65. National data shows that 1 in 3 seniors experiences a fall each year, and in 2023–24 there were 248,211fall‑related hospitalisations across Australia. For older adults, falls often lead to serious complications such as infections, loss of mobility, and reduced independence.
The RFPA continues to see the impact firsthand at the branches. The Northern Beaches branch lost seven members in one year, with four deaths directly linked to falls. Each case involved a fall, hospitalisation, complications, and eventual decline.
Most falls occur at home, often due to poor lighting, clutter, slippery surfaces, or balance issues. Evidence‑based prevention strategies include strength and balance exercises, medication reviews, home safety improvements, vision checks, supportive footwear, and avoiding ladders. You are NOT Superman anymore so forget it!
The Northern Beaches branch has introduced and distributed wristbands to its members, reminding members to “Look Down – Step Up – No Ladders.” If enough interest is shown, the RFPA will consider a wider rollout.
