RFPA Launches Statewide

“Look Down – Step Up – No Ladders” Safety Campaign

A simple wristband with a powerful message for retired and former police

Sadly, the RFPA loses members every year to preventable trips, falls, and ladder accidents. To help reduce these incidents, we are launching a statewide awareness campaign focused on simple, practical steps that keep our members safer and more aware of everyday risks.

The Retired & Former Police Association (RFPA) has launched a new statewide safety initiative aimed at reducing preventable falls among retired and former police officers — a demographic statistically over‑represented in ladder‑related injuries and home‑based falls.

At the centre of the campaign is a bright blue silicone wristband carrying three short, sharp reminders:

  • Look Down
  • Step Up
  • No Ladders

The message is deliberately simple, but early trials across several branches show it works. Members report that the wristbands act as a constant visual cue during everyday tasks, prompting safer decisions and sparking conversations with family, friends, and fellow members.

RFPA members say the initiative aligns perfectly with the Association’s mission to support the wellbeing, independence, and quality of life of retired and former police. “We know that falls are one of the most common causes of injury among our members,” one branch leader noted. “If a wristband can prevent even one serious fall, it’s worth it.”

The wristbands will be supplied free of charge to RFPA members who want one. Distribution will occur through local branches, welfare officers, and direct mail for isolated or non‑branch members.

The campaign has already attracted interest from PANSW Police News contributors, with potential for broader awareness partnerships in the future.

The RFPA encourages all retired and former police to wear the wristbands proudly — not only as a safety reminder, but as a symbol of ongoing connection to the policing family.

Members can request wristbands through their local branch or via the RFPA website.
