STOP LAUGHING… THIS IS SERIOUS!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Falls are now the leading cause of injury hospitalisations and injury\u2011related deaths among Australians over 65. <\/strong>National data shows that 1 in 3 seniors experiences a fall each year<\/strong>, and in 2023\u201324 there were 248,211fall\u2011related hospitalisations<\/strong> across Australia. For older adults, falls often lead to serious complications such as infections, loss of mobility, and reduced independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The RFPA continues to see the impact firsthand at the branches. The Northern Beaches branch lost seven members in one year<\/strong>, with four deaths directly linked to falls<\/strong>. Each case involved a fall, hospitalisation, complications, and eventual decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most falls occur at home<\/strong>, often due to poor lighting, clutter, slippery surfaces, or balance issues. Evidence\u2011based prevention strategies include strength and balance exercises, medication reviews, home safety improvements, vision checks, supportive footwear, and avoiding ladders. You are NOT Superman anymore so forget it!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Northern Beaches branch has introduced and distributed wristbands<\/strong> to its members, <\/strong>reminding members to \u201cLook Down \u2013 Step Up \u2013 No Ladders.\u201d<\/strong> If enough interest is shown, the RFPA will consider a wider rollout.
