Secretary’s Report for
2010 Annual General Meeting
- At present
our membership numbers 3,907 including 390 police widows and 616
members over the age of 80 years. We also have as members 98
Police Chaplains.
- During the
past 12 months 75 retiring police and police widows have joined
our ranks, but in the same period there have been 134 deaths,
not all being RPA members.
- According to
the records our oldest member now is Clarence Cummin LONSDALE,
former Regd. No. 3583 who is 99 years of age. Our youngest
member is Social member, Amanda Jane CLOSE, 31 years of age, who
happens to be a serving police officer in Queensland but is very
active in the Brisbane & Northern Suburbs Branch. Just recently
I had the opportunity to meet Amanda at Yamba when I visited the
Social & Fishing Activity conducted by the Northern Rivers
Branch. She is a keen fisherwoman and will be very involved in
the 2011 Fishing week which is expected to be conducted in the
Noosa Heads area. We have two retired Police officer members,
Alison SMITH and Sally MILES who are both 34 years of age.
- During the
year members of the Committee of Management attended the branch
meetings of Brisbane & Northern Suburbs, Gold Coast, Central
Tablelands, Hornsby & District, Manning Great Lakes, Mid North
Coast, Penrith Blue Mountains and Sydney. They also attended
functions organised by Central Coast, Penrith Blue Mountains and
Northern Rivers Branches.
- Members will
be aware that action to create a National Police Service Medal
has been progressing over the past couple of years. I would like
to take this opportunity to bring you up to date on
developments. Subject to the Queens assent it is expected that a
medal will be struck and commence to be issued in
September/October this year. It has always been our position
that the proposed medal should be made available to qualified
retirees and that position was endorsed by the Police Federation
of Australia who was involved in the development of the initial
proposal. The representatives from States and Territories who
participated in meetings leading to the proposal for the medal
declined to support its extension to include retirees and the
medal will be made available to Police who were qualified for
its issue as at 30 October 2008.
"After enquiry and
consideration we agreed to await the actual issue before
commencing action to seek its issue to all qualified retirees
and we have called on the incoming Committee of Management to
undertake that task. In that regard it is therefore requested
that all remain patient. From a personal view, such intended
action will involve all qualified retired Police officers
throughout Australia and I suggest that will be a voice which
should certainly be heard".
- I want to
make mention of the retirement of our Treasurer, Roy Leabeater.
Roy has given extremely long and faithful service in that
capacity for many, many years and I suggest his efforts are
worthy of special note. On a personal level I thank him for his
assistance to me in my position as State Secretary. Roy has
nominated for a Committee member position so I expect his
contribution to the management of this Association will
continue.
- I would like
to thank the branch secretaries for their assistance to me since
I occupied this position. There have been times when my learning
the function has been difficult but with their help and
patience, and especially the assistance of Barry Hocking, I have
survived and I am grateful.
- I am
confident that this Association will continue to grow and will
remain popular with retirees and their spouses. I look forward
to the coming year with both enthusiasm and confidence.
