The Illawarra Branch at its last meeting, (21 May 2018) voted to hold a “Christmas in July” function at the Corrimal RSL. This is a fully catered for LUNCHEON, with a 3 course meal “choice of menu” and includes, Dessert and Tea/Coffee. This being held on Wednesday, 18 July 2018 from 12.30pm onwards. Members and guests are invited to turn up at around 12 midday, for pre-luncheon drinks and general “socialisation”. Cost is $25 per head. Numbers to be finalized on 18 June 2018, which is date of this Branches AGM.

Over the last two meetings this Branch has welcomed, the attendance of three new members, namely Chris BERRY, (former HWP) for 15 years, then working for State Rail finishing is working life as Head of Control Centre, Hornsby. Also Warren and Dawn FITZGERALD, with Warren being stationed a Darlinghurst/Bankstown, Metro Area.

Also present have been, Beryl HAMMOND, Maureen FINDLAY, who both recently lost their husband’s, great to see them being involved, that’s what their husbands would have wanted. John Young (Branch’s Secretary) is recovering following some “health issues” has now returned home, with Bob Layton, not enjoying the “best of health” but as he says “battling on”, would appreciate couple of calls from old work colleagues.

Currently the Chairman/President of Illawarra Branch, Dave Routledge, along with wife, Julie are on a “two month” Caravan Club Adventure, with some 16-20 vans, touring to Western Australia. Interesting to hear his “tales” when he returns, mid June.

Following my return from Antarctica, I have been quizzed at last couple of meeting about my experiences. I was “Zodiac (OHS) Operations Manager” on a Research Vessel out of Ushuaia, South America. I put together an impromptu presentation to both meetings about my experiences, climate (changeable weather conditions), temperature extremes, encounters with seals and particularly aggressive “Leopold Seal”, and received a “presentation coin” from the “Chinese Antarctica Base”.

Meetings are held at 11am on 3rd Monday in Month at Wollongong Master Builders Club.

Neil Harris

(Acting Secretary)
